The Islands of French Polynesia
Tahiti is the island most familiar to travelers, though generally not the top choice of those who have visited French Polynesia. While it has some very scenic parts, the city of Papaette is a busy, somewhat run down city and there is not much in the way of activities or natural beauty that cannot be found on the other islands. Tahiti is a great place to stay upon arrival and before departure to break up the flights. Bora Bora is considered to have the most beautiful lagoon in the world. The atmosphere and amenities of the resorts are geared towards couples vacations and honeymooners - most notable the overwater bungalows with private balconies. In addition to being romantic, Bora Bora offers some great restaurants, exciting activities, privacy and relaxation. It is approximately a 40 minute flight from Tahiti. Moorea can be reached by Ferry from Tahiti, approximately a 20 minute ride. It is a bit bigger than Bora Bora and also a bit more built up (many locals live in Moorea and commute to Tahiti for work). It is home to some wonderful resorts and though still picturesque, romantic and relaxing, it is slightly less secluded than Bora Bora and there are a few more families vacationing on Moorea. Raiatea, Huahine and Tahaa are more isolated with fewer options for upscale accommodation and dining, but their serenity and smaller tourism infrastructure is a draw for travelers seeking something a bit more private.
