Scotland is one of the world's northernmost countries, so can get very cold and dark during the winter. By visiting in late spring or summer (though also the most popular time to visit), you can enjoy the nicest temperatures and most daylight.The Military Tattoo and Fringe Festival in August make it a very busy time to visit. It is a wonderful experience, but for those looking for a slightly less boisterous visit, May through July or early September may be best. Accommodations also fill very quickly during the festivals, so book early!Edinburgh is approximately 4.5 hours by train from London so can easily be combined with a trip to England as well.U.S. citizens require a passport to visit Scotland but do not require a visa.
