Road Trip Reality Check
September 16th, 2009

Ever embarked on a road trip only to realize the rental car stereo gets only one station, the route on your google directions is closed and you have no idea where to go, or the nearest food stop that looks remotely attractive is eighty miles away and your starving?

Yep! Road trips can be fun but if you aren’t prepared, they can also be stressful. This doesn’t mean you have to have every inch of your itinerary mapped out. It simply means there are preparations you can make to help keep your road trip enjoyable even when the unexpected happens.

  • Bring your GPS. Even if you reserve one when you rent a car before-hand, it’s not a 100 percent guarantee that it will be available when you get there.
  • If you have an ipod and adaptor, or some favorite tunes, bring them with you. You never know what stations will be available as you get further from home, and if you’re traveling through any mountains, reception could be very limited.
  • If leaving from home, pack a cooler. If flying to your road trip destination, bring or pick up snacks, water and caffeinated drinks if needed.
  • If you aren’t making accommodation reservations ahead of time, have some ideas of the towns where you might be able to stay and the distance to them. No one wants to be in a car for hours with someone who’s cranky from lack of sleep!
  • If you’re going overseas, make sure you can rent a car without an international driver’s license or any other necessary documents to rent the car.
  • Rental cars may be easy to spot (especially if you’re taking it through several countries) and therefore an easy target for police. Play it safe and stick to the rules of the road. Fines and penalties elsewhere may be more strict than at home.
  • I was once told by the rental company to “drive fast” through Slovenia because the insurance didn’t cover me there. We did. We got a ticket. (See rule number 6!) The moral: make sure your insurance covers everywhere you are traveling.
